Dr. Doug Pennino

Every day, life at our practice is different, interesting, and challenging – a perfect blend of science and art, and I love it passionately. It helps me achieve my main focus in dentistry – improving health and dental esthetics of our Pennino Family Dentistry patients. I really enjoy helping people and fully believe that early, conservative intervention is always less invasive, less expensive, and less painful. The only thing better than early intervention is prevention.

My wife Amy and I are the lucky and proud parents of four boys, Chase, Connor, Corbin, and Cameron, and we have two cats, Tucker and Winnie. Yes, our household was always busy … and it still is. Together Amy and I love to take long walks. You can read more about Amy on this page – she is our Marketing Manager! Outside of work and time with Amy, I enjoy social outings, as well as golf and fishing. It may be hard to believe now, but at one point, I was a high-school and college pole vaulter!

I earned my undergraduate and DDS degrees from the University of Iowa and take continuing education courses regularly to stay current with the most recent techniques in dentistry. It is important for me to continually update new techniques and technology so I can improve your dental experience. I belong to the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, and the Chicago Dental Society.

I treat all patients as if I am working on my own family and enjoy taking the time necessary to get the job done well. I am very detail oriented and take pride in the dental care I provide. One of my passions in dentistry is patient education. I enjoy spending whatever time is needed to help you understand the rationale for treatment recommendations. Helping you make confident decisions is my priority. One of my favorite ways to do this is through photography. It’s one thing to have a dentist explain to you the condition of a tooth, but there is a lot of value in having the visual to go along with it.

I work as part of our team to provide restorative, preventive, cosmetic, and emergency dental services. Through my work, I provide care in a gentle and compassionate manner to make your dental appointments as simple and painless as possible. Providing a family-centered environment where I treat you like family is a joy – I love bringing my patients into the family here at Pennino Family Dentistry.

Helping everyone get the best start for a lifetime of excellent oral health is important to me, so I spend time giving oral health presentations to children at Countryside Elementary School. Outside of dentistry I enjoy traveling with my wife Brittany, playing golf with friends and family, fishing with my three brothers (Dr. Chase, Corbin, and Cameron), and baking bread when I can find the time. My family and friends say I'm quite good at it. But my greatest joy of all is our daughter Claire. She’s got a few teeth growing in that I get to brush!

Like my father and brother, I earned my doctorate from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. One of my most important professional commitments has been to continuing education. I belong to the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, and Chicago Dental Society. Along with the rest of our doctors, I continue to learn as much as possible to improve my clinical skill and knowledge and to stay current with the ever-changing landscape of dentistry.

My healthcare philosophy is to provide high-quality, advanced, comprehensive care while promoting the value and importance of oral health and its connection to whole-body health. It is important for me to provide compassionate advanced dental care strengthened by continuous formal learning (courses, lectures, hands-on workshops, etc.). It is truly rewarding to give someone back their smile and see it light up a room.

In my free time I enjoy Tae Kwon Do (I have 3 blackbelts), the outdoors, hiking, traveling to new places (Can I cross off every National Park?), and spending time with family and friends, especially when we’re trying new foods from other cultures. I’m also passionate about giving back through volunteering my time with the Special Olympics, Give Kids a Smile Foundation, and Dentistry from the Heart, and have provided comprehensive care on two dental mission trips to Jamaica.

Inspired by my orthodontist to pursue a career in dentistry, I earned my DMD degree from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 2018 and completed general practice residency at the Ohio State University. I enjoy practicing dentistry so much as it beautifully combines my passion for medicine and for art. I belong to the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, and Chicago Dental Society.

I graduated from the Loyola School of Dentistry in 1981. Since then, I have been transforming smiles in Barrington for more than 42 years. My passion for education, commitment, and community involvement has been key to my success. My current focus in dentistry today is on comprehensive restorative dentistry.

Dentistry is not simply a job to me; it’s my passion. I love my craft and I am continually working on refining my skills to provide the highest quality cosmetic and complex restorative dental care. I believe that what I do goes far beyond just treating teeth, it’s also about building strong relationships with my patients.

I also firmly believe that continuing education is paramount to my success. I routinely attend high-level educational conferences around the world to learn from the world’s foremost leaders in dentistry. I have also been appointed a member of the Resident Faculty of Spear Education in Arizona, a world leader in continuing dental education, so I travel often to Arizona and teach monthly workshops to dentists from around the world.

As a child, I was always one of those rare individuals who actually enjoyed going to the dentist. Now, as a dentist myself, I strive to inspire that same passion for dentistry in others by delivering effective, quality treatments with a caring and compassionate touch. To me, you are not just a patient - you are a cherished family member whom I eagerly greet with open arms at every visit. Therefore, there is no need to be afraid or anxious - in fact, you can look forward to visiting the dentist.

I am passionate about traveling, meeting new people, and playing indoor and outdoor games. I also enjoy setting goals for myself and crossing them off my bucket list as I achieve them. One of my biggest dreams is to be a contestant on a popular reality show like "Top Chef," "The Amazing Race," or "Fixer to Fabulous." I am always ready and excited to embark on new adventures and see where life takes me!

I lived in Los Angeles, Greece (in Athens and a small village near Albania), and Virginia before moving to Woodstock in 1987.

My husband, Gerardo, and I have two children named Ethan and Aubree. We also have three dogs: Groot, Pixie and Rocket. One of my professional goals is to provide dental care on a missionary trip.

I started my career 12 years ago after graduating from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene. Little did I know that I would become licensed to practice dentistry in three states - my home state of Illinois, as well as Arizona and Colorado, where I worked for over seven years. Dentistry is my passion, and I enjoy educating my patients about the crucial connection between oral health and overall well-being. I always strive to build long-lasting relationships with my patients based on trust and camaraderie so that they can feel confident about their smiles. Being surrounded by positivity at PFD is invigorating. Trust, encouragement, and compassion are values that everyone embodies, and it's what makes me thrive. When not at the office, I love working out, gardening outdoors, traveling, and doting on my tuxedo cat, Max.
